Reverse-curve designs are supposed to let water cling around the front lip while debris falls off. In a brochure, fine. In a real WNC mountain rainstorm, water sheets off the curve and overshoots the gutter completely. The system you paid for becomes the system that puts water against your foundation.
Foam blocks sit in the trough and water filters through them. They trap moisture, decompose over a few years, get gross, and become a habitat for mosquitoes and mildew. Cheap up front, expensive to dig out and replace later. Skip them.
Vinyl and plastic guards warp in the WNC summer sun, get brittle in winter cold, and pop off in a stiff wind. We see them in customer yards every year after a storm. They look fine for a season. They’re trash by the second.

Most gutter guards on the market were engineered for oak leaves, not Fletcher’s pine needles. The needles are thin, long, and they ride straight through guards designed for fat broad-leaf debris.
Six-inch white pine and hemlock needles drop year round across most WNC neighborhoods. Screen lets them through. Surface-tension covers funnel them right into the downspout opening where they pack up at the elbow. Only micro-mesh with the right opening size actually stops them before they enter the trough. That’s why Devon walks the canopy first and picks the product to the property. If you’re under heavy pine, we recommend micro-mesh. If you’re under oak and maple, screen often does the job for less.

The questions Devon gets asked the most when he’s walking a Fletcher property for a guards quote.
Yes, the right ones do. Micro-mesh and screen guards installed correctly will stop the leaves, pine cones, twigs, and small debris that clog your gutters. They will not eliminate maintenance entirely. Pollen and shingle grit still settle on top of the mesh over a few years and need a blow-off. Anybody promising you a maintenance-free system is overselling. Devon will tell you what to expect on the property.
Most of the time, yes. If your existing gutters are solid, pitched correctly, and within their service life, we fit the guard system to the existing run. If the gutters are sagging, pulling off the gutter board, rusted through, or undersized for the roof, putting new guards on a failing system is throwing money at the wrong layer. Devon walks every section and tells you on-site. If a small repair gets the gutters ready for guards, we do that. If the system is at the end of its life, we’ll honest-talk you toward replacement in the same trip.
The micro-mesh and screen guards we install don’t slide under your shingles. They fit on top of the gutter, secured to the gutter itself. Some guard products on the market do slide under the first row of shingles and that’s where the warranty issue can come up with certain roof manufacturers. We don’t install those. Our products don’t touch your roof.
Micro-mesh stops pine needles. Screen does not. White pine and loblolly needles are thin enough to ride straight through a standard screen and pack up at the downspout elbow. If you’ve got a pine canopy, you want micro-mesh with a fine enough opening to keep the needles on top of the guard where they can blow off. Devon checks the trees first when he walks the property.
Not the way you used to. The twice-a-year ladder-and-bucket cleaning goes away. What stays is an annual blow-off across the top of the guard once the leaves have come down, and an occasional check on the downspout outlets. Most homeowners with guards go from two annual cleanings to one quick pass a year. If that ever needs to happen, we offer gutter cleaning as a separate service.
Stainless steel micro-mesh installed correctly typically lasts 20+ years and outlives most aluminum gutters underneath it. Aluminum screen is closer to 10 to 15 years depending on UV exposure and how often it’s lifted for cleaning. Plastic or vinyl guards we won’t install, so we won’t quote a lifespan on those.

You can, on a one-story home, if you’re comfortable on a ladder and you’ve picked the right product. Most DIY guard failures come down to two things: the wrong product for the canopy (screen on a pine-needle property), or the guards bolted to a gutter that wasn’t cleaned and pitched first. The product is the cheap part. The labor and the call on which guard to use is most of the value. If you’re on a two-story home or higher, the fall risk isn’t worth the labor savings.
