Why gutter size matters on Asheville commercial roofs
Asheville averages over 47 inches of rain a year, more than Seattle. A single storm can drop two inches in an hour. Commercial buildings have long roof runs and large surface areas, so a 5-inch home-grade system is undersized for almost every commercial roof here. This is even more important for flat roof buildings where improper drainage could easily lead to leaks.
We size every install to the building, not a generic spec. Roof area, slope, and WNC rainfall data from the National Weather Service all go into the math. The system handles a real WNC storm, not an average one.
For commercial roofs we recommend 6-inch K-style or 6-inch European box as the floor, with 3x4 downspouts placed every 30 to 40 linear feet of gutter. Higher-volume roofs (over 4,000 square feet of catchment per drop) move to 7-inch with 4x5 downspouts. We size the system to the building, not to a price point.
